Eco Schools
"One of the first conditions of happiness is that the link between man and nature shall not be broken."
- Leo Tolstoy
Welcome to Eco-Schools at Omagh Academy
The Eco-schools team meet every Monday lunchtime at 1.20pm in Room 9 with Mrs McColgan, Mme Miles & Mrs McLaughlin.
Through Eco-Schools we aim to promote sustainable living through whole-school action. Our three chosen topics which we focus on are; biodiversity, litter and waste.
As part of our biodiversity topic the pupils plant flowers, shrubs and trees as well as feeding the birds and taking part in the RSPB’s ‘School Birdwatch’. Numerous bird boxes and bug hotels are also maintained throughout the school grounds.
The litter topic aims to raise awareness of the impact litter has on our environment. Throughout the year the pupils take part in the ‘Big Spring Clean’ in association with ‘Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful’. For this the pupils do litter picks around the school grounds and Campsie.
We will as in previous years be participating in ‘Cash for Clobber’ as a way to reduce waste.
To encourage the reduction of food waste we look at the website ‘Love food hate waste’ and use recipes from here to make for example banana bread. The pupils also do other methods of recycling including battery recycling.
