The school community of Omagh Academy was saddened to learn of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
In June we had been delighted to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee, so it was with much reflection and respect that we adhered to the period of National Mourning. The flag was flown at half-mast and special readings & prayers were delivered at Assemblies.
On Friday 16th September, students and staff gathered for a more formal 'Service of Reflection'. Invited guests were Mr Peter Waterson - the Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Tyrone, Mrs Waterson, Mr Bill Reilly (Chairman of Board of Governors), Mr Eric Spence (Vice Chair) and Mrs Spence.
Mrs Maxwell led the service with bible readings delivered by Mr Waterson, Miss Faris & Mr Hamilton. Prayers were said by the Head Girl and Head Boy, Jessica & Conrad. Twenty senior musicians provided musical accompaniment for the hymns - The Lord's My Shepherd and I cannot tell why He, whom angels worship - and they were joined by drummer, Euan, for the National Anthem. We also took time to watch a video presentation which reflected on The Queen's faith; faith which underpinned her life of service to the country, commonwealth and to God. The Service was written & prepared by Mrs Bingham.
